Nine European Countries, Canada, and Japan Demand the Opening of the Rafah Crossing and Condemn Violations in Jerusalem

Condemnation | 28-01-2026

International pressure on the Israeli occupation is intensifying as Western condemnation of Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories broadens—particularly the restrictions imposed on the Gaza Strip and violations against United Nations institutions in East Jerusalem.

In a joint statement issued today, nine European countries, alongside Canada and Japan, called on Israel to fully comply with facilitating the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, stressing that the deteriorating humanitarian situation requires immediate action to ensure the flow of relief to civilians.

The statement also urged the Israeli occupation to reopen all crossings, including the Rafah crossing, in both directions, warning that the continued closure of crossings exacerbates the humanitarian crisis and undermines international efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of Gaza’s population.

In a related context, the signatory countries expressed their condemnation of the Israeli authorities’ demolition of buildings belonging to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem, describing the move as a serious violation of the status of UN institutions and a direct obstruction of their humanitarian work.

Separately, the United Kingdom, France, and Canada issued a joint statement strongly denouncing the demolition of UNRWA’s headquarters in East Jerusalem, warning that targeting United Nations facilities undermines international law and threatens the ability of humanitarian agencies to carry out their missions.

Countries participating in the statements affirmed that protecting UNRWA premises and ensuring its freedom of operation constitute both a legal and moral obligation, calling for an end to any measures that undermine the UN presence or endanger humanitarian workers.

This growing diplomatic momentum reflects widening international concern over the continued Israeli restrictions on Gaza and violations in East Jerusalem, amid escalating calls for concrete steps to ensure respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians.
