Faj Attan Disaster: Figures Document One of the Harshest Moments of the War in Yemen

Blogs | 20-04-2026

Various crimes committed by the Saudi- and UAE-led coalition in Yemen have resulted in significant human and economic losses. Among the most severe was the attack on Faj Attan on April 20, 2015.

On that tragic day, the Faj Attan neighborhood in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, witnessed a bloody assault that left widespread humanitarian consequences, the effects of which continue to this day.

Estimates indicate that the destruction spread across an area of approximately 7 square kilometers, with around 3,000 residential and commercial buildings destroyed, in addition to 200 vehicles that were either completely or partially damaged.

This масштабe destruction led to mass displacement, forcing nearly 80% of the area’s السكان to flee their homes—no fewer than 30,000 displaced persons who lost their shelter in an instant.

In terms of human casualties, at least 120 people were killed, including 25 children and 6 women. Meanwhile, 647 individuals were injured—among them 56 children and 30 women—with varying degrees of severity, requiring urgent medical intervention under extremely difficult conditions.

The healthcare sector in the city faced unprecedented strain, as 14 hospitals received large numbers of casualties. Morgues became overcrowded with bodies, forcing some medical facilities to use commercial refrigeration units on an emergency basis to preserve the मृत bodies—an image that reflects the scale of the humanitarian disaster.

Beyond the immediate losses, the coalition attack led by Riyadh and Abu Dhabi left deep, long-term آثار. Thousands of families continue to suffer from displacement, loss of housing, deteriorating economic conditions, and psychological trauma, particularly among children and survivors.

Years later, these figures remain a stark testament to the scale of human suffering and the gravity of the coalition’s actions against Yemenis. They also underscore the ongoing need to support affected populations and strengthen efforts to restore at least a minimum level of stability and dignity for civilians.
