Recent human rights testimonies have revealed the severe humanitarian suffering endured by Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya inside Israeli prisons, reflecting the scale of violations faced by Palestinian detainees away from the eyes of the world.
During a recent visit, his lawyer, Nasser Odeh, reported shocking details about his detention conditions. According to the testimony, Israeli authorities keep him continuously restrained with hand and leg shackles, while depriving him of access to safe drinking water, adequate food, and necessary medical care, despite his suffering from chronic illnesses that require regular treatment and monitoring.
The visit itself was far from a genuine opportunity to assess his well-being. It took place in a room monitored by surveillance cameras, and communication was conducted via telephone through a glass barrier, while prison guards remained present throughout. These strict measures, combined with the limited duration of the visit, prevented him from speaking freely about the conditions he faces out of fear of retaliation or punishment.
Legal testimonies further indicate that Abu Safiya was subjected to beatings and abuse while being transferred to the Negev Prison last February, before being placed in solitary confinement. Since then, he has continued to suffer from severe and persistent pain in his back and neck.
The tragedy is compounded by the deterioration of his health. He suffers from chronic heart disease and high blood pressure and has also contracted scabies as a result of the poor conditions of his unjust detention. Furthermore, he has lost approximately 25 kilograms of body weight due to inadequate nutrition and medical neglect, a serious indication of the suffering he continues to endure in prison.
The story of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is not merely the ordeal of a Palestinian detainee; it is a living testimony to a painful humanitarian reality in which a doctor who dedicated his life to saving patients and treating the wounded has become a victim of harsh detention conditions that threaten his health and life, as well as unjust practices by the Israeli occupation. Meanwhile, human rights organizations continue to call for an end to Israeli violations and for guarantees that he receives the medical care and fundamental rights afforded under international law.
