Crimes That Do Not Expire: Testimonies Reveal the Abuse Allegedly Endured by Palestinian Female Detainees

Arrests | 21-07-2026

The suffering of Palestinian female detainees in Israeli prisons continues, as disturbing testimonies describe alleged serious violations affecting the dignity and physical and psychological well-being of women held in detention. These accounts have intensified concerns over the lack of international accountability and the continued silence surrounding the alleged abuses they face.

Palestinian lawyer Khaled Mahajneh relayed the testimony of a female detainee who was released from the Gaza Strip. According to her account, she was repeatedly raped over the course of one week by several Israeli prison guards.

According to the testimony conveyed by Mahajneh, the former detainee also stated that other female prisoners had been subjected to similar abuses during their detention.

These testimonies highlight the extent of the suffering reportedly endured by Palestinian women behind bars, along with the profound psychological and physical consequences that may persist for many years. They also point to harsh detention conditions and what the testimonies describe as a lack of adequate protection for the detainees' fundamental rights.

Mahajneh stated that approximately 90 Palestinian women remain detained in Israeli prisons, the majority of whom are being held under administrative detention, a measure that allows Palestinians to be detained for extended periods without formal charges or a fair trial.

He also described practices he characterized as degrading, including nighttime raids on female prisoners' cells, violations of their privacy, and various forms of pressure and treatment that, according to him, undermine their human dignity.

These testimonies have raised serious questions about what critics describe as double standards in the international community's approach to human rights issues. They argue that alleged violations attributed to Israel are often met with silence or muted responses that fall short of the gravity of the reported allegations, while international actors are quicker to condemn and take action when abuses are attributed to other parties.

In light of these serious allegations, human rights advocates have renewed calls for independent, transparent international investigations into all reported violations against Palestinian female detainees, for those responsible to be held accountable, and for an end to impunity.

Calls have also intensified for the immediate release of Palestinian female detainees, an end to their suffering in detention, and the guarantee of the full protections afforded to them under international humanitarian law and international human rights law, without discrimination or double standards in the application of justice and accountability.
