Despite escalating political pressure and U.S. threats against international voices critical of the Israeli occupation, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, continues to publicly support the rights of Palestinian civilians, stressing that what the people of Gaza are enduring constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian and legal standards.
Albanese stated that the activists of the “Steadfastness Flotilla” succeeded in exposing Israeli practices before the world, calling on Arab states to halt all forms of cooperation with Israel amid the ongoing war, blockade, and violations against Palestinian civilians.
She also described the Israeli occupation’s detention of flotilla activists in international waters as “piracy and a clear legal violation,” emphasizing the need to compel Israel to respect international law and adhere to humanitarian conventions that guarantee the protection of civilians and the freedom of humanitarian and relief work.
The UN official further revealed that around four thousand Palestinians have disappeared after being detained by Israeli authorities, holding Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir directly responsible for those violations, amid growing human rights reports documenting torture and enforced disappearances inside detention centers.
Albanese’s remarks come at a time when she is facing increasing incitement campaigns and political pressure because of her criticism of the war on Gaza. Nevertheless, she continues to speak out about the suffering of Palestinian civilians, warning of the dangers of ongoing international silence regarding what she described as systematic violations targeting civilians, prisoners, and humanitarian activists.
