Israeli attacks on hospitals and medical facilities in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip continue as part of a repeated pattern of assaults targeting healthcare institutions and medical personnel, in conduct that reflects blatant disregard for international humanitarian law and the absence of any real deterrence from the international community.
During the past few hours, 25 members of the medical and administrative staff at Hiram Hospital in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre were injured following Israeli airstrikes targeting the vicinity of the hospital. The incident has once again highlighted the growing dangers faced by healthcare institutions and workers while carrying out their humanitarian duties.
The repeated attacks on hospitals have deprived thousands of civilians of medical services and further worsened the suffering of the wounded and the sick, amid human rights warnings that the continued targeting of the healthcare sector constitutes a grave violation of the Geneva Conventions, which provide special protection for hospitals and medical personnel during armed conflicts.
Observers believe that the recurrence of these attacks without firm international measures has encouraged the occupation to continue committing violations, amid the international community’s failure to impose effective accountability mechanisms or provide protection for civilians and humanitarian facilities.
In this context, Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms condemned the continued Israeli attacks on hospitals and medical personnel, stressing that these practices constitute serious crimes and grave violations of international humanitarian law.
The organization also called on the International Criminal Court to take these violations into consideration within the cases currently under review and to work toward holding those responsible accountable and ensuring they do not escape punishment.
