Every year, the suffering of millions of Palestinian refugees is renewed. For more than seven decades, they have lived under the burden of occupation, displacement, and the denial of their right to return to the homes from which they were forcibly expelled in 1948.
On World Refugee Day, observed globally on June 20, Palestinian refugees represent one of the world's largest and longest-running refugee crises. More than six million Palestinian refugees remain dispersed across refugee camps and host communities in Palestine and throughout the Arab world, enduring difficult humanitarian and economic conditions, while facing ongoing Israeli violations of their fundamental rights as guaranteed under international law and United Nations resolutions.
Today, this suffering has reached unprecedented levels in the Gaza Strip, which is experiencing a severe humanitarian catastrophe as a result of the ongoing Israeli military offensive and the mass displacement that has accompanied it. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee their homes multiple times in search of safety, while displacement sites lack even the most basic necessities of life, including food, clean water, healthcare, and secure shelter.
Displaced people in Gaza are living under tragic conditions in overcrowded schools, tents, and shelters, amid the spread of disease, malnutrition, and the collapse of infrastructure and essential services.
Thousands of families have also lost their homes, either completely or partially, leaving them homeless while bombardment continues and access to humanitarian assistance remains extremely difficult.
While the world marks World Refugee Day under the banners of protection and solidarity, Palestinian refugees continue to face a different reality characterized by ongoing forced displacement and the denial of their fundamental rights, foremost among them the right of return and compensation in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
World Refugee Day serves as an opportunity to renew calls on the international community to fulfill its legal and humanitarian responsibilities toward Palestinian refugees, provide them with protection, ensure the safe and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid, and put an end to the Israeli violations that continue to worsen their suffering, paving the way toward a just solution that guarantees their legitimate rights and preserves their human dignity.
Palestinian refugees remain a living testament to the longest refugee tragedy of the modern era, while the Gaza Strip is rapidly becoming the largest displacement and humanitarian crisis in the world today.
